CAP Solar Eclipse Mission

On October 14, 2023, and April 8, 2024 eclipses will cross North America. To make the most of this pair of unique astronomic events, the Rocky Mountain Region has partnered with NASA’s GLOBE Observer program to give Civil Air Patrol members the opportunity to become solar eclipse citizen scientists.

Squadrons across North America are invited to create teams of 5 to 10 members to track the effects of the solar eclipse on cloud cover, air temperature, and wind speed/direction. CAP citizen science teams will also help create the first continent scale data set that measures the effects of solar eclipses on VHF radio operations.

Solar Eclipse Mission For AEMs

The solar eclipse on April 8, 2024 will occur during the school day. For AEMs who would like to give their students the opportunity to be solar eclipse scientists during this special astronomical event, we have created a special citizen science mission specifically designed 3rd-12th grade students to collect eclipse data using the CAP Weather STEM Kit.
